PEZ collector Michael Wintig, who has attended the event for the past three years, said he flew all the way from Austria - where PEZ was invented - to come to the convention with his wife. Last year, the PEZ Gathering raised a total of $2,000 and hopes to beat that this year, Belyski said. All proceeds from the auction go to Make A Wish Foundation and the Hole in the Wall Camps. The convention also has a silent auction, Belyski said, which raffles off various PEZ dispensers, PEZ pins and other PEZ-related items. "I think what really draws people to the convention is that PEZ appeals to different people," he said. The convention show, which is open to the general public on Saturday, usually attracts roughly 500 area residents, Belyski said. The event started Thursday and was only open to PEZ collectors, traders and buyers on Thursday and Friday. The PEZ Gathering usually brings around 200 collectors, traders and sellers, said Belyski. Richard Belyski started the convention 13 years ago in Orange - where the headquarters for PEZ is located - but when it started to get more popular, he said, he decided to move the event to Stamford.
"I love getting items that most people don't have, like a PEZ record with the original PEZ song on it, or the PEZ cans that were around before the plastic dispensers were made. "I really just attend these conventions to make a few bucks to buy more items for my collection," said Laspina. Laspina, who started attending PEZ conventions around the country in 1991, said he has around 2,000 PEZ-related items in his collection. Laspina, a New Jersey resident, is one of the many collectors buying and selling PEZ items this weekend at the 13th annual Northeast PEZ Collectors Gathering located at the Holiday Inn in Stamford.
